The Challenge

In the October 2018 General Women’s Session of General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson gave four challenges to all the women of the Church. The challenge I want to focus on today is to “read the Book of Mormon between now and the end of the year”. To find the other challenges, read the whole talk here!

This can seem like a HUGE task! Reading a book of scripture that is 531 pages from October to December?!? In our household, we have an 10 year old and a busy mom who are taking on this challenge. Both of these scenarios seem like it will take some serious work, but we can do this!

The Promise

The best part about any challenge given to us by the Lord’s Prophet, is there will always be a promise attached. The promises included in this challenge are no different. We are promised:

“If you will accept this invitation with full purpose of heart, the Lord will help you find a way to achieve it. And, as you prayerfully study, I promise that the heavens will open for you. The Lord will bless you with increased inspiration and revelation.”

As we read, we are also encouraged to mark the scriptures that refer to the Savior and then be intentional about talking of Christ, rejoicing in Christ, and preaching of Christ with our families and friends. As we do that, we are promised:

“You and they will be drawn closer to the Savior through this process. And changes, even miracles, will begin to happen.”

How to Make it Work

Progress charts that include filling in a box or checking off a completed item always seem to go over well when faced with a large task. I have created just such a progress chart for you to make this challenge more doable and easy to complete!

This challenge takes 12 weeks to finish. Within those 12 weeks on the chart are 7 spaces that contain the page number that you need to have read to by that date. When you complete that page number, simply color in or check off the box! There is also a place below the week so you can write the dates corresponding with that week.

Here is a large one-page Progress Record:

More Promises

I am excited to complete this Book of Mormon challenge. I remember participating in a similar challenge given by President Gordon B. Hinckley. He promised that

“If each of you will observe this simple program, regardless of how many times you previously may have read the Book of Mormon, there will come into your lives and into your homes an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a straightened resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God.”

I remember feeling like I was involved in this great worldwide cause! I loved following up with friends and neighbors finding out where they were in their reading. If you would like more ideas on how to complete the challenge, there is a whole follow-up article to President Hinckley’s challenge that has both ideas and testimony of experiences from around the world.
