We just had a two day General Conference where we were able to hear from Prophets and Apostles living on the earth today. How will you remember what was taught and what you learned?

Now What?

After General Conference, we have a few choices. We can:

  • say what a wonderful experience it was and move on with life
  • review notes we took from time to time
  • read or listen to the talks again and again to truly understand and live what was taught

This video explains the benefit, blessing, and duty we have to learn from General Conference.

If your home is anything like mine, General Conference is a major event that is looked forward to every six months. No matter how much we prepare though, it is nearly impossible to keep all the littles quiet for two hours straight. Because of that, I am extremely grateful for how accessible the Conference talks are. I don’t want myself or my family to miss out on the gems and truths taught. Here are a few ways that our family studies the talks until the next Conference comes.

Listen

Each Sunday we listen to a Conference Talk as a family. We rotate who is in charge of choosing the talk and leading the discussion. After listening to the talk, each child is invited to share what they learned, found interesting, or thought about while listening to the talk. My kids have become familiar with the names and faces of church leaders this way. They love to hear new stories that help them understand gospel principles.

Read

We love to read and memorize quotes. We have quotes all over the house. Just as an experiment the other night at dinner, I asked the kids who could recite the quotes in our bathroom. Each kid rattled off the quotes. There is power in thoughtful statements placed around the house! By regularly changing quotes, it keeps them fresh new. The bathroom is a great place to hang quotes since it is a place that people will frequent, or sometimes stay awhile!

Some great places to get quotes are:

LDS Media Library. You can get Inspirational Picture Quotes sorted by speaker, event, topic, or scripture verse.

I also like doing a search on Pinterest for the latest General Conference. I save my favorites to my Inspiration Pinterest Board and am going to print them out for little daily affirmations for me to memorize.

Study

I’ve talked about my scripture study before. This is where i get the most out of the Conference talks. By listening to a few talks each week, I am able to become familiar with the lessons and principles taught in General Conference. I usually listen to them on my phone while I get ready in the morning. When I am working on large projects in the yard, I usually have my phone tucked in my back pocket playing the most recent General Conference. There are so many resources available to study the words of our Prophet and Apostles.

You can listen to or watch the talks at lds.org, or order the Ensign magazine to receive a hard copy to study and take notes in.

What’s in it for Me?

In order to find the message that is meant for you, some time and study is needed. I love General Conference. I love knowing that no matter how crazy life gets, there is hope and peace and joy in the world. Studying the Conference talks gives me the added strength I need to carry on when life gets tough. I love knowing that the messages delivered to us are exactly what the Lord would have us to learn so we can make it through another six months until the next Conference. The Lord is mindful of us and has great things to teach us if we do our part to seek and find.
